Dear colleagues and friends,

February 11th is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This day serves as a reminder that women and girls play an important role in scientific and technology communities and an opportunity for us to promote full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls.

WorldFish is committed to fostering a safe, respectful and inclusive environment for all women. Women are critical to transforming aquatic food systems for healthy people and a sustainable planet. Taking on some of the Agenda for Sustainable Development’s greatest challenges, such as eradicating poverty and tackling climate change, will need the mobilization of all available resources.

The different ideas, viewpoints and experiences that women bring to the table strengthen our research and innovations. WorldFish is advancing scientific discourse and collaboration, gaining global recognition and offering better solutions for both women and men thanks to their outstanding research work.

As we honor the achievements of women and girls in science throughout the month of February, check out our website and social media channels for a collection of blog posts and publications that detail the pioneering research of women scientists and innovators in diverse facets of aquatic food systems research around the world.

I encourage you to join the upcoming CGIAR Women in Research and Science (WIRES) event on Monday, 13 February 2023 to understand the enablers for women scientists and researchers to thrive in the workplace.

Thank you,
Essam Yassin Mohammed
WorldFish Director General (Interim)
CGIAR Senior Director of Aquatic Food Systems (Acting)

Capacity building is a cornerstone of CGIAR’s Gender, Diversity and Inclusion (GDI) Action Plan. Hence, understanding unconscious bias, inclusive communication and managing diverse teams are some of the skillsets needed in CGIAR Leaders to ensure safe spaces, especially for women, at the workplace.

Offering GDI training programs for all staff is an important step to building this. Last year, 40 Initiative Leaders from across CGIAR picked up the latest edition of the Inclusive Leadership Training Program. The online training program focused on creating inclusive workplaces where employees feel trusted, valued and psychologically safe as CGIAR continues to evolve in this new age of leadership.
