In celebration of the Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture 2022, as declared by the United Nations, Sri Lanka Forum for Small Scale Fisheries (SLFSSF), in partnership with Sri Lanka Association for Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (SLAFAR) and the Ocean University of Sri Lanka (OCUSL), organized an international conference covering the South and South-East Asian region under the theme 'Fishing for Life.'
Featuring invited speakers such as WorldFish's long-time colleague, John Kurien and FAO's Nicole Franz, the conference brought to light, the important contribution made by artisanal and small scale fisheries to food supply, nutrition, employment, poverty alleviation and wellbeing of the people in the region, while at the same time, unearthed issues of governance failures, including social injustices emerging from the process of blue economic development.
As part of our commitments to explore actional solutions for sustainable management of artisanal, small-scale fisheries and aquaculture, WorldFish supported the goals of Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture 2022 and the Sri Lanka Forum by showcasing our research and innovation in aquatic food systems through our 2030 Research and Innovation Strategy and CGIAR's initiative in 'Resilient Aquatic Foods for Healthy People and Planet.'
