Achieving global food security while maintaining a healthy planet is central to the Sustainable Development Goal agenda and the debate proceeds on how to transform the way we produce, distribute, and consume food to meet this goal. Developments in sustainable aquaculture, fisheries and new forms of aquatic foods show growing promise and may play a key role in moving this agenda forward.
In this ‘fire-side chat’ event hosted by Dalberg, leading champions of aquatic food systems WorldFish's Director General and CGIAR's Senior Director in Aquatic Food Systems Gareth Johnstone and WorldFish's Global Lead in Nutrition and Public Health and this year's World Food Prize Laureate Shakuntala Thilsted discussed the significance of aquatic foods as future foods, their growth potential as well as reflected on WorldFish-Dalberg's joint roles and positions within One-CGIAR.
Together, they shared how the concepts and ideas on aquatic foods systems started, partnerships with Dalberg and others, the shift towards the 2030 Research and Innovation Strategy on Aquatic Foods for People and Planet and the journey to the 2021 World Food Prize. They also presented WorldFish's influence in shaping the new global narrative on increasing the importance of aquatic foods in a sustainable food systems transformation for nature, climate and people.
