The Inauguration of Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model GIFT Hatchery will be held today, 7 June 2019 at Leihitu, Bobonaro, Timor-Leste. The Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) hatchery will be inaugurated by H. E. Joaquim Martins Gusmao and H.E. Philip Hewitt, Ambassador of New Zealand.
The hatchery was co-funded by the project and owner Joao Da Silva, who will operate the hatchery with six staff and technical support from the government and WorldFish through the CGIAR Research Program on Fish Agri-Food Systems. The hatchery was planned and constructed in six months (November 2018–April 2019).
The USD 4 million ‘Partnership for Aquaculture Development in Timor-Leste’ Activity (PADTL) project run over a five-year timeframe from 2014 to 2019 has been contributing in terms of government sustainable economic development and nutritional goals by increased direct access to reasonably priced fish for the rural poor, link producers with domestic and export markets, and deliver economic benefits for aquaculture farmers.
