A hybrid conference exploring policy, innovations and investment opportunities in aquaculture to advance food and sustainable development goals
Date: Wednesday-Saturday, 22-25 September 2021
In this global conference hosted by FAO, NACA and the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, leading experts in governments, business, academia and civil society from the aquaculture industry gathered to discuss innovative solutions in research and development to ensure the sustainability, resilience and inclusivity of future aquaculture production.
Focussing on the theme 'Aquaculture for food and sustainable development,' the conference marked the launch of the Shanghai Declaration, which outlines the principles and strategic pathways to maximize the contribution of sustainable aquaculture to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

- From 15:00-16:30 (UTC+8) - WorldFish's Project Lead for Sustainable Aquaculture in Nigeria Rohana Subasinghe facilitated and WorldFish's Aquaculture and Fish Genetics Scientist in Zambia Rose Basiita was a panelist at the session on 'Aquatic genetic resources and seed supply.'
- From 16:30-18:00 (UTC+8) - WorldFish's Project Lead for Sustainable Aquaculture in Nigeria Rohana Subasinghe co-led the session on 'Biosecurity: reducing the burden of disease.'
- From 20:00-21:30 (UTC+8) - WorldFish's Director General Gareth Johnstone joined other organizations to give his remarks in support of the Shanghai Declaration and sustainable aquaculture – as an important component of aquatic food systems - in meeting shared national and global aspirations for establishing sustainable, healthy and inclusive food systems.
