India is the world's fourth-largest producer of fish and other aquatic foods. With nearly 10 million people residing in more than 4000 coastal communities and relying on the sector to earn a living, initiatives to improve fisher and farmers’ incomes are crucial to reaching India’s goal of ‘No Poverty by 2030,’ which is also pertinent to delivering higher returns on investments while supporting the attainment of livelihood security as well as climate adaptation and mitigation goals.
With this established foundation, WorldFish is seeking to build a strong program in India by strengthening research and development with partners, including the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII). The CII charts its pathway by working closely with Government and thought leaders, including Pawan Goenka, the Chairperson of the Government of India's Department of Space (INSPACe) and the Chairman of the Advancing Local Value-Add and Exports Committee (SCALE).
As part of SCALE’s work to advance the growth of the tilapia industry in India, WorldFish and CII have collaboratively developed a report on the business case for scaling tilapia production in India titled ‘Business Case for Scaling the Production of Tilapia in India: A Report for the SCALE Committee of the Government of India.’
WorldFish's Acting Director in Aquatic Foods Biosciences, John Benzie and India's Country Lead, Arun Padiyar, will join the launch event to discuss WorldFish's role in improving revenues within the aquaculture and fisheries sectors in India.
