Every year, the Fellows of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), a think tank to promote research for the prosperity of poor and marginalized populations through ecologically sustainable food systems, celebrates their Foundation Day on the 5th of June. As part of the celebration, the Academy invites an eminent personality to deliver the Foundation Day lecture.
In the past, the invited speakers include the former President of India, A P J Abdul Kalam, Indian Space Research Organization, K Kasturirangan as well as former Executive Director, UN Environment Program, Erik Solheim, just to name a few.
This year, the Academy has recognized the outstanding intellectual contributions of WorldFish’s Global Lead in Nutrition and Public Health, Shakuntala Thilsted in addressing emerging challenges in aquatic food systems to ensure food security and nutrition, human health and livelihood outcomes.
Drawing on her expertise as Vice Chair of the UN Food Systems Summit’s Action Track 4 on ‘Advancing Equitable Livelihoods’ and recent 2021 World Food Prize Laureate, Thilsted presented key insights on the role of aquatic foods in the sustainable transformation of global food systems for healthy people and planet.
