Coastal communities and ecosystems are facing increasing risks from climate hazards. Global climate change impacts the food, land, and water systems upon which life depends. As a result of these major challenges and chronically underinvested needs, there is an increasing desire by state and non-state actors alike, to protect the ocean along with a recognition of the interplay between the ocean and climate in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific, where there is the highest concentration of vulnerable fisheries- and aquaculture-dependent communities.

This desire, coupled with a growing interest in the blue economy, provides timely opportunities to address poverty, food security, nature loss, and climate change, through tested and new opportunities. The BlueTech Superhighway program will establish South-South cooperation between countries in Asia and Africa to adapt and scale promising technologies piloted on one continent and implemented in another.

WorldFish is co-hosting a side event with the Government of the United Kingdom at the Our Ocean Panama 2023 to share about the ‘Asia-Africa BlueTech Superhighway’ project and draw upon the knowledge and expertise of global, regional, and local stakeholders to share their thoughts, and position on a vision of South-South cooperation between countries in Asia and Africa. The focus will be to adapt and scale promising technologies piloted on one continent and implement in another to boost their development of sustainable, inclusive, and climate-resilient aquatic food systems.
