Scientist

Esther Magondu is an aquaculture scientist, Aquatic Farming Practices at WorldFish. Her research focuses on fish culture systems with interests in Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture (IMTA).  She is currently working for the Asia Africa Blue Tech Superhighway project (AABS) as the lead for Work Package 2 in Kenya focused on conservation and livelihood improvement through development of Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture systems.

Before joining WorldFish, Esther worked as senior research scientist at Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute from 2012 to 2024. In this role, she collaborated in research and development of mariculture using best management practices, culture systems, fish nutrition, brood stock management, seed production, ornamental fish culture and fish health. Esther has also been involved in interventions focusing on climate smart aquaculture, capacity building for technology transfer to fish farmers in community groups, and sustainable use of coastal and marine ecosystems all geared towards blue economy development. Esther is a certified project manager, in addition she has a PhD Fisheries and Aquaculture, Pwani University, Kenya, 2022, MSc Aquaculture and Marine Resources Management, Wageningen University, The Netherlands, 2012, and BSc. Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 2009, Moi University.
