LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – The Government of the Republic of Zambia, through the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment (MGEE), today signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with WorldFish to drive climate resilience, sustainable land and water management, and sustainable livelihoods in Zambia’s aquatic food systems.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Douty Chibamba, Permanent Secretary of MGEE, and Victor Siamudaala, WorldFish Zambia Country Representative.

The five-year agreement strengthens cooperation between Zambia and WorldFish in research, innovation, and policy development to enhance food and nutrition security, economic opportunities, and environmental sustainability.

The partnership will focus on collaborative research to enhance climate adaptation, sustainable aquaculture, and resilient aquatic ecosystems. It will also support capacity-building initiatives to equip local communities, researchers, and policymakers with the latest scientific knowledge while advancing policy development and technical support to accelerate Zambia’s transition to a green economy.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Dr. Douty Chibamba, Permanent Secretary of MGEE said,

“WorldFish comes to us with their expertise in fisheries, combined with our expertise in weather environment and climate change in general. We are forming a very formidable team to make the fisheries sector remain productive even under a changing climate. When we join hands together, we are a better team”.

WorldFish has worked in Zambia since 2008, pioneering research and innovations to enhance Zambia’s fisheries and aquaculture productivity, strengthen value chains, and increase fish consumption to improve nutrition and livelihoods.

“Together, we will drive evidence-based solutions that empower fishers, farmers, and policymakers to build a food system that is both climate-smart and inclusive,” said WorldFish Director General, Dr. Essam Yassin Mohammed.

With Zambia’s abundant water resources and WorldFish’s expertise, the partnership sets the stage for pioneering solutions that not only benefit Zambia but also serve as a model for climate-resilient aquatic food systems across Africa.
