A dialogue event promoting an exchange of ideas on the challenges and opportunities of the Blue Economy in Timor-Leste and the promotion of sustainable use of its oceanic resources.
Date: Wednesday, 8 June 2022
Time: 14:30-17:00 (UTC+8)
The United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC), co-hosted by the Governments of Kenya and Portugal, will take place in Lisbon to mobilize action, the Conference will seek to propel much-needed science-based innovative solutions aimed at starting a new chapter of global ocean action. Prior to the United Nations Oceans Conference, Portugal through its diplomatic missions is promoting local debates – the Blue Talks – to discuss and trigger wide interest in Ocean related issues on the topic: “Scaling up the ocean action based on science and innovation for the implementation of Goal 14: stocktaking, partnerships and solutions”.
The “Dili Blue Talk”, co-organized by the Embassy of Portugal and UNDP, will be held on the World Ocean Day and will focus on one of the UNOC’s dialogues’ themes: “Promoting and Strengthening Sustainable Ocean-based Economies, in particular for Small Island Developing States and Least Developed Countries”. Located in the Coral Triangle, Timor-Leste possesses some of the most biodiverse waters in the world.
Even though climate change and ocean-related issues are a transversal reality to the world’s population, different communities are affected asymmetrically. The small Island Developing States are particularly vulnerable to environmental impacts and often lack the means to cope effectively with the inherent challenges. Nonetheless, vast maritime territory ownership offers these states the opportunity to develop their potential in the Blue Economy, in different sectors, namely fisheries, aquaculture, marine transportation, tourism, renewable energy, marine biotechnology and seawater desalination sectors.
As part of our commitments to Timor-Leste's Blue Economy, WorldFish's Research Analyst, Joctan Dos Reis Lopes, will take part in the session to present on small-scale fisheries management, innovation and technologies, particularly on PeskAAS invention, as part of the policy-investment pathways for food and nutrition security in Timor-Leste via the frameworks of WorldFish's '2030 Research and Innovation Strategy' and CGIAR's 'Resilient Aquatic Foods for Healthy People and Planet.'

We look forward to your active participation.
