The conventional aquatic feeds that are currently on the market have a significant environmental cost and are frequently out of reach for many smallholder aquatic food producers due to their prohibitive costs and other barriers to access and use. In Sub-Saharan Africa, scarcity, unsustainability, as well as the high environmental and financial implications of feeds, have been identified as the primary obstacles to expanding smallholder production.

WorldFish has partnered with the Swedish University of Agriculture and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) on a 5-year project to develop low-cost and highly nutritious aquatic feeds based on novel ingredients to improve the sustainability of aquatic food systems in Kenya, Nigeria, and Zambia. known as 'Development and Scaling of Sustainable Feeds for Resilient Aquatic Food Systems in Sub-Saharan Africa (FASA).'

This event will mark the Swedish launch of this aquaculture project, bringing together the expertise in the field of nutrition, health, genetics, and epigenetics to discuss a holistic approach to address issues associated with feed and nutrition in tropical aquaculture species and enhance feed acceptance and feed utilization in Tilapia and/or Catfish by 'nutrition reprogramming.'
