Context and WorldFish Participation:

The Committee on Fisheries (COFI), is the only global inter-governmental forum where FAO Members meet to review and consider issues and challenges related to fisheries and aquaculture. The 35th Session of COFI is a unique body in that it provides periodic global recommendations and policy advice to governments, regional fishery bodies, civil society organizations, and actors from the private sector and the international community.

With the 36th session of COFI planned for July 2024, and to be preceded by the second Small Scale Fisheries Summit, WorldFish looks forward to the leadership of Saudi Arabia, who has been elected president. In particular, with efforts in empowering and developing the fishery sector, starting with the establishment of the National Livestock and Fisheries Development Program, preserving fishing, offering support to minor fishermen through soft loans to buy fishing boats, and working on building a modern network of ports on the coasts of the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf.

WorldFish's Jörn Schmidt will share his knowledge and experience working on social-ecological systems, marine and fisheries ecology, and inter- and transdisciplinary concepts, to contribute to the review of FAO programs in the field of fisheries and aquaculture and their implementation; and conduct periodic general reviews of fishery and aquaculture problems of an international character and appraise such problems and their possible solutions to concerted action.

We look forward to your active participation.
