Senior Scientist
Dr. Alex Tilley's research focuses on using better data to improve food systems and livelihoods in aquatic environments. He develops and tests digital reporting systems and automatic analytics to provide reliable, near-real-time data for adaptive management and empowering small-scale fishers in the blue economy. A key aspect of his work is leveraging big data and artificial intelligence to uncover patterns and anomalies in the contributions of small-scale fisheries to livelihoods.
Alex earned his Ph.D. in Marine Biology from Bangor University in 2012, with a focus on fish movement and trophic ecology. He has been involved in small-scale fisheries and marine research since 2006, working in Mozambique, Belize, the Turks & Caicos Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Timor-Leste. He joined WorldFish in early 2016 after completing a two-year postdoctoral fellowship with the Smithsonian Institution.
