Consultant (Literature Review of Fish Seed Systems in Africa)

Well-functioning fish seed systems are crucial for human nutrition and improved livelihoods. Ensuring availability of consistently high quality seed to poor farmers in developing countries remains a major challenge. There are two dimensions to this problem:

  • Maintaining the quality of seed from the breeder to the farmer and
  • Devising cost-effective mechanisms for disseminating fish seed to farmers.

As part of its work on seed systems development, WorldFish seeks to recruit an experienced consultant to conduct a systematic review of formal and informal fish seed systems in Africa.

Scope of Work

The consultant will be required to conduct a literature review on fish seed systems in Africa paying attention to both formal and informal systems and evaluating performance along important dimensions related to seed production (both breeder and commercial seed), seed quality, seed distribution and marketing, commercialization pathways as well as the organization of seed value chains and dissemination models. The consultant will be responsible to:

  • Conduct a systematic review of (un)published literature and secondary data on fish seed systems in Africa.

Requirements

This opportunity might be suitable for you if you have the below skills and qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Economics, Agricultural Economics, Development Economics, Agribusiness, Statistics, Social Sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in systematic literature review.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Knowledge of seed systems.
  • Understanding of fisheries and aquaculture.

Budget

Applicants should indicate overall budget, include indication of fees/per day rates of individuals involved, and any other expenses.

Location and Duration

The successful consultant should be available to commence the consultancy as soon as possible. The consultant will have a maximum 40 days, with both outputs fully completed by 31 July 2021. This position is open to nationals & international applicants.
