To increase income opportunity for BHHs and making availability of quality tilapia fingerlings to BHHs at the village level, one adaptive trial on Fry and fingerling production of WorldFish developed Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) using pond breeding and nursing technology –as an IGA for selected BHHs has been under taken. Accordingly, 12 BHHs have been selected for the trial to fine tuning the tilapia fry and fingerlings production activities as an income generating option. Quality tilapia fingerlings will be supplied to BHHs from this trial. This trial will continue up to June 2017. After completion of the trial, based on technical and economic feasibility the activities will be replicated in all Suchana working upazilas. A training manual and farmer’s guidebook has been developed (draft form) on commercial form of semi intensive aquaculture appropriate for Suchana BHHs in order to increase income opportunities of the BHHs. After learning phase those will be finalized and printed for implementing phase uses. A need assessment has been conducted among 10 fish nursery operators, 10 mobile fish fingerlings traders (Patilwala) and 4 hatcheries. Based on the assessments, a comprehensive plan will be developed for strengthened the fish seed value chain that will enable the system to make available quality fingerlings for Suchana BHHs, About 60% of the Suchana working areas are inundated during flood season then all ponds go under water and only raised house remain above water level. During this period, income for very poor households have been constrained due to restricted mobility and limited resources. In order to minimize the shocks of BHHs through increased fish and vegetables production, three adaptive trials to develop appropriate fisheries and horticulture technologies are in the process of implement. A total of 84 Suchana BHHs have been selected. The following technologies will be tried for fine tuning based on agro-ecological context of Suchana BHHs in Sylhet and Moulvibazar district. • Fish production in small flooded homestead ponds by poor households of NE Bangladesh using eco-friendly approach for increase production, consumption and income; • Development of low cost cage aquaculture using suitable fish species and feed by poor household in Sylhet and Moulvibazar district; • Fine tuning the technology of soil based smart vertical gardening in fool affected areas in Sylhet and Moulvibazar district; Out of planned 7,300 BHHs for fisheries and horticulture activities, 2,032 BHHs with ponds have been verified for technology based group formation. Verifications were focused on management of ponds, interest in participation and others scope of fisheries. (a) Prepared primary list of inputs vendors who are supposed to supply inputs of fisheries and horticulture to BHHs will be involved in fish and vegetable/fruit production; (b) Organized meeting workshop with IPs and coalition partners to share implementation modalities; (c) Drafted training technical manual and farmer’s guidebook on household based pond aquaculture and horticulture for Suchana BHHs; (d) Formed 6 technology based groups (20-30 BHHs per group) for fisheries and horticulture in Balagonj, Kanaighat of Sylhet and Komolgonj of Moulvibazar.
