Context:

Ahead of the 2024 Global Small-Scale Fisheries Summit in Rome, Italy, the Tanzanian Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries is hosting the 2024 Africa Regional SSF Summit to convene the African Union member states and regional institutions on their shared goals to advance the blue economy in the region and to synchronize on the regional collaboration and coordination mechanisms needed to promote SSF socio-economic transformation and growth in the countries.

The Global SSF Summit aims to take stock of implementation of Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF Guidelines) and inform future priority actions. The Africa Summit will offer a space, in particular for small-scale artisanal fishers, fish workers and their affiliated organisations, and other key partners at African and national levels to share and combine their voices to inform the global dialog and processes.

WorldFish, under its Asia-Africa BlueTech Superhighway (AABS), is partnering with local organizations, governments and institutions in multiple countries in the region, including Tanzania, to help unlock their blue economy potential through co-development and adaptation of proven technical innovations to local contexts. Three of its four work packages directly support SSF Guidelines implementation. The work of AABS, therefore, aligns well with the objectives of SSF Summit.

The Summit provides an opportunity for WorldFish to:

- spotlight the technical activities and expertise AABS is bringing and further entrench its work in the region as a key initiative and partner in sustainable fisheries and blue economy growth in Africa.

- realize the vision of blue economy for countries and to advance SSF Guidelines in the region

- engage with other countries and partners on shared SSF challenges and opportunities to synergize our efforts

- increase visibility of WorldFish in the region as a key partner in national transformation of aquatic food systems

- inform the shaping of “African voice” for international policy dialog, investments, and action

WorldFish Participation:

WorldFish will host a panel discussion to hear from senior-level representatives from countries and key stakeholder groups (regional bodies, networks and private sector) on the status of SSF socio-economic transformation through their perspective, challenges and opportunities to unlock the blue economy in the region. The discussion will be framed within the context of AABS areas of work and its overarching objectives, presented at the start of the event.

The insights and vision key learning on capacity-sharing, ideally with a concrete example, shared by panelists could inform or feed into the outcomes from the Africa Summit. Additionally, they will feed AABS’s planned activities and expanded reach, particularly a brief or factsheet highlighting how AABS can support this. This can be input into the SSF Global Summit as well as a nice standalone product.

We look forward to your active participation.
