WorldFish has delivered 7,000 Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia GIFT fry to EON Aquaculture Limited in Bangladesh. This is the first commercial sale of GIFT to Bangladesh, and a step toward making improved tilapia strains more accessible to fish farmers in the country.
This delivery paves the way for expanded access to high-quality tilapia stock, creating new opportunities for small-scale farmers in the country. Developed by WorldFish in 1988, GIFT has transformed global tilapia farming by providing a fast-growing and resilient strain that supports food security and livelihoods. Today, more than half of the world’s tilapia production comes from GIFT derived strains.
Bangladesh is a leading producer of farmed fish and will benefit from this improved strain. Increased productivity and better resilience to environmental changes will strengthen food security, create economic opportunities and support sustainable aquaculture growth.
