Ocean conservation is vital for sustaining aquatic food systems but multiple threats, including climate change and pollution, demand urgent global attention and collaborative efforts.
The world needs to establish food and nutrition security for millions of people facing hunger in Africa, crucial for the sustainable socio-economic development and the long-term prosperity of the continent. Malnutrition is particularly severe in sub-Saharan Africa, with almost a quarter of its population undernourished. Sustainably increasing the supply of aquatic foods could make them affordable enough to prevent some 166 million micronutrient deficiencies around the world by 2030.
African countries have some of the lowest national greenhouse gas emissions, yet a majority of them remain poor and highly vulnerable to a myriad of climate risks. Evidently, the continent is experiencing rising temperatures and declining precipitation patterns, resulting in unprecedented rates of reduced land and soil productivity, desertification and biodiversity loss, and increased intensity and frequency of droughts and flash floods, among other climate-related challenges1.
