Dr Emmanuel Mbaru is a Research Scientist (Fisheries Assessment and Technology) at WorldFish. Previously, Mbaru was a senior scientist at the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute. Mbaru obtained his PhD in Marine Science from James Cook University, Australia. His research focused on the diffusion of conservation technologies in fisheries socio-ecological systems. Mbaru draws on theories and methods from network science and complex systems to better understand key issues such as how governance institutions respond to climate impacts on transboundary fisheries, how social networks influence sustainable outcomes of conservation projects, and how conservation practices spread through society. Mbaru grew up in Kenya interacting with indigenous coastal communities and always had a deep connection with the oceans and a passion for supporting communities who value and depend on it. He is deeply interested in contributing actionable insights to support innovative transformation in fisheries systems and is obsessed with all things related to fisheries technology.
