Former WorldFish Assistant Director General, Modadugu Vijay Gupta, has been awarded the Sunhak Peace Prize, an accolade given to those who are judged to have “contributed to the peace of future generations”. This year’s themes were ocean conservation, climate change and aquaculture.

It is the second major international awarded given to Dr. Gupta who is also the recipient of the World Food Prize

Dr. Gupta, who was with WorldFish for 15 years, was honored for pioneering the blue revolution and his lifetime investment in developing aquaculture as an alternative solution to the future food crisis.

Dr. Gupta’s focus while at WorldFish and beyond has been on the development of environment friendly aquaculture technologies that benefitted small-scale farmers and addressed issues of poverty, nutritional deficiency and self-resilience. His approach also championed women’s increased participation in aquaculture.

WorldFish Director General, Dr Stephen J. Hall, said: “I am not surprised that Dr. Gupta has been again awarded at such a high level. His work is a cornerstone for our continued work towards promoting fish as a food resource able to provide relatively low-cost, high quality animal protein and aquaculture as a key solution to address food and nutrition insecurity.”

The Sunhak Peace Prize is “intended to recognize and empower innovations in human development, conflict resolution and ecological conservation”. Each winner will receive $500,000 at an August 28 ceremony in Seoul, as well as an opportunity to describe their activities to an audience of 1,000 dignitaries from around the world.
