Proceedings of the Workshop on a Framework for Future Training in Marine and Coastal Protected Area Management held in Manila, Philippines, from 3 to 7 November 1997. With funding from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the workshop was organized by the Coastal Zone Management Centre (CZMC), the Netherlands, and the ICLARM. Part I of this book presents the general workshop summary. Part II gives a summary of the workshop sessions, which include: (1) identification of training needs, assessment of existing capacity, approaches and strategies for optimal use of available resources; (2) recommendations for curricula, training materials and tools; (3) role of marine protected areas in biodiversity conservation; (4) opportunities for cooperation with regional programsfor future implementation of training programs; and (5) building of training capacities of the region. Part III contains four papers that were presented prior to the discussions of the four regional working groups for Southeast Asia (Pacific), South Pacific, Caribbean, East Africa and Eastern Indian Ocean.
