The Mekong River Commission (MRC) Summit is the highest-level political event in the MRC calendar occurring every four years. It gathers the heads of governments of the four Member Countries and political leaders and development partners to review Mekong cooperation and provide strategic directions. The Summit attracts a range of global and regional experts in the fields of water and related resources (energy, food, transport), transboundary rivers, river basin management, governance, and development to present and discuss the latest knowledge and innovative solutions for the Mekong and other basins.
The theme 'Innovation and Cooperation for a Water Secure and Sustainable Mekong' could not be more timely or relevant. The Mekong is undergoing transformations, with great challenges in terms of changing flow regimes, degrading environmental assets, increasing population and water use, and flooding and drought. There is no better way to do this than to innovate – in policy, technology, and approach – and bring together traditional and new coalitions to cooperate to address the challenges and capture the opportunities.
