Water scarcity - in terms of quantity and quality - remains the most critical challenge for aquaculture expansion. As a result, arid lands and other water-poor territories have been ignored as potential areas for aquaculture development. Yet about 43% of the African continent, supporting the livelihoods of nearly 485 million people, is considered as arid but has underground water sources. Aquaculture systems that optimize water use efficiency and adapt to different environmental conditions are important for successful tilapia farming in arid lands.
In line with this, IFAD and WorldFish have forged a fruitful partnership to build resilience and accelerate solutions to food security, and poverty reduction and to address the high-level impacts of climate change through the 'Advancing Climate-Smart Aquaculture Technologies (ACliSAT)' project since 2019. The ACliSAT project contributes to poverty reduction and nutrition by promoting climate-resilient and more productive culture practices of Nile Tilapia for different water and environmental conditions in emerging and existing aquaculture sectors.
In conjunction with its successful implementation and completion, a closure workshop was held to present the goals achieved in supporting the capacity building of national aquaculture research institutions and extension agencies and promoting the adoption of technologies, including water-use efficient and cost-effective systems such as the Improved Pond Raceway System (IPRS), promotion of improved post-harvest practices by fish farming communities in three countries – Egypt, Eritrea, and Ethiopia.
