Aquatic foods – fish, invertebrates, algae and aquatic plants captured or cultured in freshwater and marine ecosystems – play a central role in food and nutrition security for billions of people and are a cornerstone of the livelihoods, economies, and cultures of many communities.
Yet, debates and decisions about food systems generally focus on agriculture and livestock while aquatic foods’ unique value and interconnections with terrestrial food systems are often left out of food system analyses, discussions, decisions, and solutions.
In this Science for Nature Symposium hosted by the Kathryn Fuller Science for Nature Fund, global leaders in science, policy, and conservation explored the science and innovations behind aquatic food systems, from rivers to oceans, that can provide healthy sustainable diets at a low environmental impact.
WorldFish’s Global Lead for Nutrition and Public Health Shakuntala Thilsted joined the Symposium to present the keynote remarks on developing holistic, nutrition-sensitive approaches to aquatic food systems for nourishing nations and planet.
