Climate change is reshaping our world, and aquatic food systems are on the front lines. With rising sea levels, warming waters, and more extreme weather events, the livelihoods and food security of millions are under threat. While aquatic foods are part of the solution to climate challenges, the growing demand for aquatic foods must be balanced with the need to reduce environmental impacts and meet biodiversity and climate goals.
WorldFish is committed to addressing these challenges head-on. We work to adapt fisheries and aquaculture production to a changing climate, build the resilience of producers and consumers, and empower communities to restore and sustainably manage aquatic resources.
Our Focus Areas
Building Resilience for Producers and Consumers
We help small-scale fishers and farmers adapt to the growing extremes and shocks brought on by climate change. Through tools, training, and innovative practices, we’re ensuring that aquatic food systems continue to support livelihoods, incomes, and nutrition security.
Scaling Low-Impact Production Systems
While demand for aquatic foods is growing, meeting this demand must not come at the expense of the environment. WorldFish is leading the way in scaling low-impact production systems like seaweed, bivalves, and integrated aquaculture—some of the most sustainable forms of food production in the world. At the same time, we’re working to reduce the environmental impact of conventional aquaculture systems like tilapia farming.
Restoring and Protecting Aquatic Ecosystems
Healthy aquatic ecosystems are the foundation of aquatic food production. WorldFish supports community-led efforts to restore fisheries, manage coastal resources, and protect biodiversity. These efforts promote sustainable use while improving community well-being and resilience.
Advancing Climate-Smart Aquaculture
From developing climate-resilient breeds to improving feeds and farming systems, we’re creating aquaculture practices that thrive in changing conditions. These innovations ensure aquatic food production can meet the needs of future generations while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Influencing Policy and Action
We actively engage in national and international policy discussions, advocating for the inclusion of aquatic foods in climate and biodiversity strategies. By influencing global frameworks, we aim to elevate the role of sustainable aquatic food systems in tackling climate challenges.

Measuring Our Impact
By 2030, WorldFish aims to achieve:
- Support 5 million small-scale fishers and farmers to adapt to climate change.
- Restore 1 million hectares of aquatic ecosystems, ensuring sustainable resource use and biodiversity conservation.
- Reduce 30% of greenhouse gas emissions from key aquatic food systems.
WorldFish is uniquely positioned to lead the transformation of aquatic food systems for a climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable future. By integrating science-backed solutions with community-driven approaches, we are paving the way for a healthier planet and equitable livelihoods.
