Global events: World Fisheries Day 2018

Today, 21 November, fishing communities around the globe are marking World Fisheries Day.

Despite the growth of aquaculture, small-scale capture fisheries will continue to supply most of the fish consumed in much of the developing world in the coming decades. The majority of these fisheries are small-scale, operating in rivers, lakes, wetlands, coral reefs and estuaries in coastal seas, and provide livelihoods for millions of people.

Country events: Inauguration of Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model GIFT Hatchery in Timor Leste

The Inauguration of Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model GIFT Hatchery will be held today, 7 June 2019 at Leihitu, Bobonaro, Timor-Leste. The Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) hatchery will be inaugurated by H. E. Joaquim Martins Gusmao and H.E. Philip Hewitt, Ambassador of New Zealand.

AquaLINC Project Final Workshop

In Bangladesh, the aquaculture production has grown rapidly with the production of fish from aquaculture in 2017-2018 being 24.5 lakh MT, accounting for 56% of total fish production. Within the aquaculture sector, the production of tilapia has grown rapidly from 15,000 MT in 2006-2007 to, 3.85 lakh MT in 2017-2018. It has been projected that in 2030, the total aquaculture production of the country could potentially reach to 80 lakh MT with the production of tilapia being 10 lakh MT.
